He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in 1979, and returned to grandfather's homestead, practicing large animal medicine seasonally and operating the 10,000 acre farm & ranch. Clifton ran his own cattle in North and South Dakota, Wyoming, and a dozen counties in Montana. The rugged life on the ranch chiseled the message "A man is only as good as his word." Clifton received his real estate license in 1997 and formed Mont-Wyo West in 1998 with two partners. In 2001 Clifton and his family moved to Billings due to his health. After his two partners moved on in 2003, Mont-Wyo West metamorphosed into Montana-Wyoming West.
